RE: Full Time Fiver Suggestions

If money isn't a big issue you should consider Newmar. They are made for full timing. Good luck in yoiur decision.

No 12 Volts in Fiver

After returning from recent trip I discovered I had lost all 12 volt power inside the Fiver. No lights, refrigerator, etc. Battery tested okay. Fuse panel inside bathroom only has auto fuses for individual circuits. No master breaker. I don't think the converter would be involved as it supplies 120 volts from campground hookup. Is there a breaker/fuse for the battery feed? Any other suggestions appreciated. Russ olds34@aol.com

RE: How Long Do You Keep your Unit

In a couple weeks from now my wife and I will take delivery of our 4th travel trailer in the past 7 years. We started out with a used 27' Sunline, and liked it so much that we sold it after a year and bought a new Sunline (same size). We owned that one for 2 years, then sold it and bought a new 2004 Airstream. We sold the Airstream last fall and are now waiting to take delivery of our first 5th whleel -- a 40' Newmar Kountry Aire. Our total accumulated depreciation loss on the 3 trailers that we've sold was approx. $17,000 - not bad considering all the fun we've had RVing 3-4 months each year. Flyfisher, We had Sunline trailers also among other brands. Sunlines were real good for a light weight trailer. We then bought a 1999 Newmar Kountry Star Fiver. Great unit, no problems to speake of. Only drawback is the weight. I hope you get a big horse for that 40'er. One of the heavier unit made. You might need a medium duty to do the job right. Good luck and if you need any more info feel free to drop a line. We're not to far away in Altoona and camp down your way some.

RE: what kind of wheel chocks

Rotochocks are the best. They secure the trailer better than any other chocks. They are made extremly well and do not corrode or fall apart. They also can be padlocked. I made a set of chocks using the wood blocks and all thread and drove of with one in place and never felt it. Try this with the rotochocks and you won't get very far. They sure help with trailer movement. Just make sure measurement between tires is accurate when ordering. You'll love them many years. Happy camping!

RE: Vintage fiver

I also have seen a very similar setup at the NSRA Street Rod meets. This was several years ago. The car and trailer was painted green. I must check my albums as I'm sure I have a picture. At closer inspection the car had severe body cracks that I assumed were from the stress of hauling the fiver. If anyone is interested I can look for and post a picture. Later

RE: Changing a tire

I recently returned from the Rio Grand Valley following a couple of months of warm weather, pulling our fairly heavy fifth wheel and one of those famous Goodyear Marathons blew like a cannon. I didn't need our Pressure Pro to alert us. We called our Good Sam ERS but they took too long, so I backed the good tire up on a ramp of 2 X 8's as I have done before and put on the spare. This is much safer and easier than a jack. As for those people who keep talking about overloading the good tire or axle, etc. I must tell you that you are wrong. I am a retired engineer who was involved in designing and developing heavy and light truck axles for over 30 years for both International Harvester and Dana and I can tell you that such components are designed to handle at least 3 times the rated load due to the dynamic impact loads that they experience when striking such things as chuckholes. By the way, we found a Michelin dealer and bought 4 new XPS Rib tires and I now have more peace of mind. Thanks for the comments. I agree the design of the truck axles allow for uneven lifting. However do you think rv axles and suspensions are built to the same standards? Welcome your opinion on this. Thanks in advance.

RE: Changing a tire

I have a few questions on this subject. For those who use impact wrenches--Are these 12 volt, some other cordless or 110 volt? If 110 volt do you have a generator on board? Wrench brand, model number, source and pricing would be helpful? When using bottle jack(s),what do you put on top of jack at frame? And what do you put at the bottom under the jack? I imagine there should be something, metal or wood, to spread the weight around with the small jack top and also at the bottom especially on soft ground. Any and all information appreciated. I have a very heavy fiver, (14,000#), and I do have one of those ramps but I am concerned about damage to suspension and/or axles.

Black Valve-- Hard to operate

1999 Kountry Star Fiver Black Valve hard to operate but does not leak. I had a RV tech crawl underneath fiver. There is a access panel held on with screws. After removing a few screws there wasn't any opening. (I assume a larger hole would need to be cut to work on the black valve and then reinstall the access panel with screws.) He cut a small hole to see valve. He said the valve was unique and had a connection for the rod that connects to the pull handle. Yes, this does have a rod operated valve. He then calls his dealer and they could not come up with this valve and therefore could not replace valve. Can anyone supply information on this.? Is this valve unique to Newmar? Is replacement difficult? Rod moves freely so I assume valve seal is not sliding properly. Any and all information appreciated. Russ

RE: Power Dolly alternative for a 5er

Do these power dollys have brakes? It seems a 10,000 fiver going down even a small grade would spell disaster.

RE: Towing 34ft rig 2000 lb pin with V10 F250

If you are not over the GCWR of the truck you should be fine. I do think this setup would work better with 410 gears.
